The Imperfect Subjunctive

Imperfect Subjunctive
  • Use the imperfect Subjunctive to persuade someone else to do something, to express emotions, and express doubt or uncertainty.
  • Depending on whether or not the main verb is in the present tense or in the preterite/imperfect tense you use either the present subjunctive or the imperfect subjunctive.
  • Take the Uds./ellos/ellas form of the preterite and remove the -ron ending and add the imperfect subjunctive endings.
  • Ar- ara, aras, ara, áramos, aran; Er/Ir- iera, ieras, iera, iéramos, ieran.
  • Spell changing verbs, stem changing verbs nad irregular verbs have the same rules in the imperfect subjunctive.
  • Ir: fueron-fue-; habler: hubieron-hubie-; pedir: pidieron-pidie-

The Conditional Tense

Conditional Tense
  • Use to express what a person would do or what a situation would be like.
  • To form the conditional you add the endings to the infinitive.
  • The endings are the same for all verbs.
  • Ex. ía, ías, ía, íamos, ían
  • Ex. hablaría, hablarías; sería, serías; iría, irías.
  • In the future tense any irregular verbs are the same and have the same stem in the conditional.
  • Ex. decir- dir; haber- habr; poder- podr; saber- sabr; tener- tendr; venir- vendr.

Present and Present Perfect Subjunctive with Doubt
  • Use the Present Subjunctive to express Doubt, Uncertainty, or Disbelief about actions in the Present.
  • Use the Present Perfect Subjunctive to express Doubt, Uncertainity, or Disbelief about actions in the past.
  • The Present Perfect Subjunctive is formed with the Present Subjunctive of haber and a past participle.
  • Examples of doubt or uncertainty. Dudo que; Es posible que; Es dudoso que. + Subjunctive form (exist, do exist, will exist)
  • Examples of disbelief. No creo que; Es imposible que. + Subjunctive form (existed, have existed)
  • Expressions of disbelief, knowledge, or certainity are usually followed by the indicative.
  • Ex. Creo que; Estoy segura que; No dudo que; Es verdad que. + indicative.

The Present Perfect Tense

Present Perfect
  • Combine the Present tense of the verb haber with a past participle to form the present perfect tense.
  • Ex. he, has, ha, hemos, han
  • You use the Present Perfecr in the same way you use the corresponing English way.
  • Ex. haven't repaired.; have you had.
  • To form the past participle of verbs add ado to ar verbs and ido to er/ir verbs.
  • Ex. hablar- hablado; vivir- vivido; comer-comido.
  • If a verb has two vowels (except for ui) require an accent mark on the i in the past participle.
  • Ex. caer- caído; traer- traído; leer- leído; oir- oído; reir- reído; creer-creído.
  • Some spanish verbs have irregular past participle endings.
  • Ex. abrir- abierto; ver- visto; morir- muerto; resolver- resuelto.
  • If you have negative words, object pronouns or reflexive pronouns place them before the form of haber.
  • Ex. No he repartido.; Mi profesora me ha escrito.; El dueno se ha ido.

The Present Perfect Subjunctive

Present Perfect Subjunctive
  • Refers to actions or situations that may have occurred before the action in the main verb
  • Ex. have worked.; has worled.;have collected.;haven't participated.
  • Present Perfect Subjunctive, use the present subjunctive of the verb haber with a past participle: haya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayan.
  • Present Perfect Subjunctive uses the same regular and irregular past participles and perfect tenses as you have used and seen in the past.

Nosotros Commands

Nosotros Commands
  • Can be created with vamos a + infinitive
  • Ex. Vamos a hacer las paces
  • It can also be created with a command with a nosotros form.
  • The nosotros command form is the same as the nosotros of the present subjunctive.
  • Ex. Resolvamos el conflicto.
  • The stem changing verbs whose infinitive ends in ir change from e-i or o-u in the nosotros form
  • Ex. Pidamos perdon por el malentendido.; No duramos al aire libre.
  • Car, gar, zar ending verbs have a spelling change in the nosotros commands
  • Ex. No critiquemos a nuestros padres.; Empecemos a pensar un poco en ellos.
  • Direct and Indirect object pronouns are attached to the end of affirmative commands, but come after the negative and before the affirmative commands.
  • Ex. Celebremos la amistad. Celebremosla.; No le mintamos.
  • To attach a reflexive or reciprocal pronoun at the end of a nosotros command, drop the final s of the command before the pronoun.
  • Ex. Alegremonos con sus exitos.; Atrevamonos a darles nuestras opiniones.

The Future Perfect

Future Perfect
  • The future perfect tense in spanish is formed using the future conjugation of haber and the past participle
  • The future perfect tense is used when describing what will have happened by a certain time
  • As well the future perfect can be used to speculate about something that may have happened in the past
  • The future conjugation of haber is yo- habre, tu- habras, el/ella- habra, nosotros- habremos, ellos/ellas- habran
  • To form the past particple add the suffix -ado to -ar verbs and -ido to -er and -ir verbs.
  • Example- Habre hablado- I will have spoken
  • Example- Habrás comprado una casa en un año?- Will you have bought a house in a year
  • The future perfect tense is often used with the phrase dentro de plus time
  • EX. Dentro de dos anos habre comido mucho cosas- In two years i will have eatan alot of things
  • As well the future perfect is often used to speculate
  • Ex: Se habre enterado de que no ibas- perhaps she found out you were not coming

  • The future tense in spanish is used to indicate future time, as well to express probability in the present
  • The endings of verbs in the future are e as a emos eis and an all but the nosotos require accent marks
  • Normaly the infinitive is used as a verb stem
  • Example COMER yo-comere tu-comeras el/ella- comera nosotros-comeremos ellos- comeran
  • Irregulars include decir-dir, haber-habr, hacer-har, poder-podr, poner-pondr, querer-querr, saber-sabr, salir-saldr, tener-tendr, valer-valdr, venir-vendr
  • Sample sentence: Marisol nos dira los direcsiones a florida
  • Sample sentence: Manana saldremos para la officina
